Becoming a Junior Supporting Artiste
-
Extra People Juniors is a casting agency that provides child supporting artists for roles on productions in film, television and commercials across the UK.
We are a division of Extra People which has been involved in numerous productions such as Paddington in Peru, The Crown, Bridget Jones; Mad About The Boy, Bridgerton, Gladiator and many more! -
We represent children aged 9 - 17 years old.
Once 16-year-olds have completed their GCSEs or GCSE-equivalent qualifications, they are eligible for the adult division.
16 year olds that have completed their schooling to a GCSE level do not need to be licensed to work on set.
-
Background extras, also known as Supporting Artists (SAs), are people who appear in the background of scenes of a movie or TV show! They might be in a crowd scene at a park, in a cafe or just walking down the street. They bring the world of the show to life and help make each scene feel real!
-
Yes, as long as your child's passport is in date and they have the right to reside in the UK, they're allowed to work on productions.
-
Please click here to create an application for you child!
You'll need to fill out a registration form with your child's details, including their age, measurements, skills (if any), and upload clear, recent photos.Applications must be made by a parent or guardian. If you are under 16, please ask your parent/guardian to fill this in on your behalf.
If you intend to create a profile for more than one child, you will need a separate email address for each child's profile.
We will invite you and your child to our next open day to meet the EXP Juniors team in person once we’ve reviewed your child’s profile.
There is no public jobs board to apply for roles; we will be in touch with roles that your child matches the casting brief for.
-
Registration is free! There are no sign-up/booking/admin fees charged. We only make money from commission earned from wages, which is 20% plus VAT.
-
Production companies will send us a casting brief with their specific requirements.
If your child is suitable, one of our bookers will reach out to you regarding availability and all details related to the production.
If your child is available and meets all the requirements, we will send their photos and sizes onto production.
Once selections are made by production, we will be in touch with a Booking Confirmation (if successful) or a Release message (if unsuccessful).
-
If fitting/filming takes place during school hours, permission will need to be arranged by the parent to miss school.
Extra People Juniors will provide a permission letter that the parent needs to send to the school.
The chaperone is responsible for ensuring your child does adequate tutoring while on set.
-
Yes! Although we cannot guarantee bookings for filming over weekends, you are most welcome to only respond as available to availability requests for productions filming on weekends.
-
We aim to put your child forward for as many suitable roles as possible - however selections are at productions’ discretion. Therefore we cannot guarantee bookings.
Please also be aware that booked dates can be cancelled or rearranged at short notice (these are circumstances beyond our control). However we will keep you as up to date as possible.
-
Yes. We represent your child non-exclusively and we don't have any issues with your child be represented by more than one agency.
-
Pre-Booking: Parents need to maintain their child's profile photos and casting information to ensure it's always correct and updated (i.e. measurements, payment info, address etc).
You also need to keep the booker informed of any availability changes if you have responded as available to an availability request or if your child has been booked on a production.
As a parent of a child in the performance industry, you have a very important role to play in supporting your child emotionally (through the inevitable highs and lows they will experience) and practically (getting them to and from fittings & filming).
Once Booked: You will need to sign documents on your child’s behalf each time they are booked, including an NDA, release form and a child performer’s license as well as obtain permission slips from school should your child miss school days in order to film.
Parents need to transport their child to and from set and ensure that their child is on time for their booking.
Parents are not allowed to stay on set to take care of their child, there will be trained & DBS-checked chaperones that will take care of the child on set for the duration of the shoot.
Casting
-
A booker is someone at Extra People Juniors that puts your child forward to production for castings.
The booker will be in communication with you from start-to-finish on a production regarding your child’s profile, availability, pencils, bookings, releases, NDA’s, payments etc. They are also your main point of contact for anything relating to the production.
-
We will send you an availability check via email and/or SMS as soon as your child matches a casting brief.
To ensure that we approach you with appropriate casting opportunities for your child, be sure your child’s profile is regularly updated with recent photos and accurate measurements.
Please ensure your contact details on your child’s profile are always up-to-date too.
-
This is when a booker contacts you either via SMS or email to see if your child is available for a role.
An availability request is not a booking - the booker will always be in touch with a booking confirmation or release message once production has made selections.
-
If your child is available and you have carefully read through all the information and you've answered all the relevant questions, you can click 'Available’ for the dates that your child is available.
If your child is unavailable, we encourage you to respond as ‘Not Available’ rather than not responding. Responding as unavailable does not have a negative effect on your child's profile or on the chances of being put forward for other work. We know all of our artists have lives and commitments so no one is penalised for not being available.
It’s always better that we know your child is not available rather than wondering whether our email hasn’t landed in your inbox.
-
Please contact the booker on the production. If you do not know who the booker is, please email us ASAP at expjuniors@extra-people.com .
Be sure to include the production name, the relevant shoot dates and the name of the booker if known. We do not penalise your child for becoming unavailable before they are booked as long as you let us know as soon as they have a change in availability.
-
If you respond to an availability enquiry correctly via the link and before the cut-off time, you will always receive an automatic confirmation email to let you know that we have received your response.
If you do not receive the confirmation it means your response was not registered or you tried to respond after the cut-off time.
If you have responded as available for a job, we will always try to let artists know as soon as possible the status of the job.
Productions vary in their selection process speed - sometimes we’ll know within a few hours whether your child has been booked, other times it may take a few days.
If you are waiting to hear from us regarding a confirmation or release, please be patient.
-
We always try to give as much notice and time for artists to let us know their availability to an enquiry.
However, due to the nature of the industry, the turnaround time is sometimes very short.
If you have missed the cut-off time and are unable to respond, it is likely that the available artists have already been sent to production and unfortunately the opportunity has passed.
Do not be disheartened - we’ll be in touch again the moment your child matches another casting brief we’re working on.
-
This will depend on the production. However, in most cases this will not be possible due to the fact that the hours children are allowed to be on location are much shorter and stricter than the hours of an adult.
We can never guarantee that you can wrap when your child does and because your child needs to leave the set as soon as they are wrapped, this often simply would not work.
-
This is when production has shortlisted your child for a role, so please keep the date(s) free until selections are made and update the booker if there are any changes to your child's availability.
A pencil is not a booking - we will always be in touch with a booking or release message once production have made selects.
-
Congratulations! This is when production has selected/booked your child for a role!
Please always respond by confirming your child's booking so that we can relay to the production team that your child is confirmed!
-
Once your child is booked on a production, we will contact you prior to the fitting/filming day (usually the day before) with a message containing all the information that you and your child need to know before arriving on set (i.e. call time, filming location, costume brief, production contact of the day etc).
Please always respond by clicking 'check-in' so that we’re confident that your child is attending! Otherwise, we may start panic-phoning you!
-
A release message means that unfortunately the role has been cast and your child was not selected; they are free to take on other work for those dates.
A release is nothing personal as there could be hundreds of reasons why your child was not selected and they are often outside of your and our control.
We are unable to discuss the reasons behind each release as this at production's discretion and is often not relayed to the agency.
-
If your child is booked for a fitting, it means the costume department needs to see your child prior to filming to fit them in costume.
The costume department and hair and make-up departments will prepare their look for the role they are playing on the filming day.
A fitting is a paid commitment which will be explained in your initial availability request. If you are unsure of the pay due, please ask the booker.
A fitting normally takes between 1-4 hours.
-
In the event that production has asked your child to wear their own clothing for filming, they will send a costume brief.
This brief will be shared with parents which contains the specific clothing requirements that the child should take along to filming (i.e. jeans, hoodie, hat etc).
Costume briefs usually include a mood board of images of the style and items to emulate.
Never worry if you don’t have the exact items on the costume brief - just use your initiative to match the costume brief as best you can using the items already in your child’s wardrobe. No one is expecting you to purchase new items for the costume brief.
-
No, we will contact you directly for any suitable jobs via an availability check as explained above
-
There is no harm in sending us an email should you hear of a new production that you'd like your child to be a part of however we can only put them forward to productionif they suit the casting brief/requirements.
-
Please make sure to list any special skills or talents (e.g dancing, singing, playing a musical instrument, sports) on your child's profile.
This will help us identify them for roles that require specific skills.
-
We currently only supply children for background and featured walk-on roles for productions.
We encourage you to put your child forward for these roles and not limit them to only apply for acting roles.
Being on set, even for background roles, is a huge learning experience and can often be far more involved than the name suggests.
-
The best way of increasing your child's chances of getting work is to make sure their profile is complete and up to date.
We search for artists via the criteria you fill out on your child's profile, so the more up to date their profile, the more likely they will match a brief we are working on.
If you don’t fill in their profile with all the relevantinformation, they could be missing out on potential work.
Check out our Photo Guide and our Profile Advice here.
-
Clear, well-lit photos of your child.
A headshot (close-up of the face) and a full-body shot are essential.
Photos should be recent (taken within the last 3 months) and reflect your child's current appearance.
Professional headshots are welcomed but not required; clear photos taken on a phone are usually sufficient.
Please no filters or excessive editing.
Simple costume such as a plain tee and trousers are encouraged.
-
Due to the nature of our work and how busy it is, we find it easiest to communicate via email which we’ll often follow up with a phone call.
If you send us an email, we will respond as soon as we get a chance.
On Set
-
Set is the location where the production’s filming takes place.
When not on set, your child will often be in ‘holding’, where their personal belongings are kept and where any tutoring takes place.
-
When you and your child arrive at the filming location, the following will take place:
You will sign your child in with a chaperone who will be working alongside a crew member known as an AD (assistant director).
You will be asked to leave the filming location until your child has been wrapped for the day.
The chaperone assigned to your child will be responsible for taking care of your child from the moment your child is handed over to them until they are handed back to you at wrap.
The AD or chaperone will explain what the scene entails to your child and what will be required per scene. Your child would need to listen very carefully and follow the instructions given.
Your child will receive breakfast catered for by production (all allergies and dietary requirements will be catered for, as explained further down this page).
Before stepping in front of the camera, your child will go to the costume and hair & make-up department to receive their wardrobe and accessories for the scene.
Your child’s hours on set, their hours in front of camera, their number of breaks, meals & tutoring will be monitored/managed by the chaperone and AD to ensure the safety and well-being of your child.
Once your child is done filming on set, they will go back to costume and hair & make-up to ‘de-rig’.
Your child will be wrapped (signed out) with either the chaperone, AD or PA and handed back to you to go home.
-
Your child will be briefed by a crew member once they are on set.
They will explain what your child will need to do in each scene (e.g, they might be asked to pretend to be kicking a ball or talking to a friend in the park).
Your child would need to listen carefully and follow the intructions given.
-
Unfortunately not.
Parents are allowed to drop their child off and pick them up from the filming location but no other members of the family are allowed access to the fitting/filming locations for insurance, safety & security purposes.
Think of it as your child being dropped off for a play rehearsal, you cannot watch the rehearsal and see the preparation that goes on behind the scenes as it would spoil the play for you!
-
The term 'AD' stands for Assistant Director.
This is someone from the production team that liaises with the booker, regarding all casting briefs, bookings, filming & fitting information etc., that will be present at fittings & filming.
They also liaise with the chaperone throughout the day and are responsible for signing your child in and out on set.
-
Someone professional who is fully licensed, trained, experienced, enhanced-DBS-checked and responsible for looking after your child at fittings/filming.
Parents are not permitted to look after their child on set once they are of compulsory school age, so a chaperone is hired to look after the child’s best interests instead.
-
The time that your child needs to arrive and sign in with the AD/Chaperone for all fittings and filming.
This is the time that your child will be on the clock/signed-in from.
-
Once your child is done for the day, they will return their costume and accessories to the costume team.
Then the AD/Chaperone will sign them out (“wrap them”) and they can be collected by their parents.
Therefore a wrap time is the time that your child is signed out at.
-
Due to the nature of filming, we often get all the finalised shoot details (call time, exact location, etc) the evening before the shoot.
However, we will always give you as much provisional information as we have beforehand.
The bookers will try to get call details as soon as possible in the form of a Check-In message. However if you haven’t heard anything before 5PM the day before, please get in touch with us.
When reaching out to us, be ready with the name of the project, your child's character and the Extra People Booker you’ve been in communication with.
-
This will all be relayed to the parents before filming. We usually receive rough filming hours which we state in our availability checks and booking messages.
Drop Off: Once production have provided the child's exact call time, which we often receive the day before filming, we relay to the parents as soon as we have all the information.
Please never just drop your child off outside of the fitting/filming location without ensuring that they have signed in with the designated on set contact/AD/chaperone.
Pick-Ups: We will inform you of your child's estimated wrap time. If they wrap sooner/slightly later than expected we will notify you immediately.
When your child is out at work, the chaperone/AD/production/EXP Booker will contact you with estimated finishing or collection times.
-
Emergency contacts for both us and someone on set will be provided in the check-in information.
Only contact these numbers if totally necessary and pay attention to who is best to contact as per the check-in message.
It is extremely important to notify those contacts as soon as possible of your situation so that they can make any necessary arrangements required at the fitting/filming.
-
Working hours for children are strictly regulated and adhere to UK child employment laws. They are generally shorter than adult working hours and include mandatory breaks and rest periods. We will provide you with full details of the working schedule for each production in each availability & booking message.
Fittings:the duration of a fitting can vary depending on the efficiency of the costume and hair & make-up departments fitting them, but fittings do not go over 4 hours.
We advise to allow up to 4 hours for a fitting, but in reality fittings usually last 1-3 hours.
Filming:your child will never be asked to be on set before 07:00am however, you and your child mustn't be afraid of an early alarm! The length of filming days depends on the production and the age of your child, so you and your child should be free all day when you accept a job. We will always give you as much information as possible when we make our enquiries.
Please refer to the working hours table on our Juniors Rates page.
-
Night-shoots are rare for children.
However, just like day shoots, there is a limited number of hours that a child can legally be on-set during these times.
The earliest a production can call a child for a night-shoot is 7pm.
For children aged 5 and above, a night-shoot is defined as working at any point between the hours of 11pm - 7am.
Children cannot do more than 2 consecutive night-shoots in a row, and they must have 7 days’ break before working their next night-shoot.
We will be upfront with all information pertaining to the requirements of a night shoot should you receive an availability enquiry for one.
-
Fittings: No, fittings are usually no more than 4 hours so production does not provide catering. Always ensure that your child has eaten prior to their fitting.
Filming: Yes, productions have catering services which provide breakfasts, snacks/craft, lunches, juices and water etc. By default, there will be Meat, Vegetarian and Vegan options available.
If the child is called to set for a time that is just after breakfast or lunch we will be sure to warn you that your child needs to arrive on set having had a meal.
-
We will clarify whether your child needs to attend a fitting where production will provide all of the clothing items necessary or if your child needs to take their own clothing items to set based on a costume brief.
-
Prior to the booking, we will clarify whether your child needs to attend a fitting, whether production will provide all of the clothing necessary, or if your child needs to take their own clothing items based on a costume brief.
Will my child get paid for providing their own outfits to set?
Yes, they will receive a fee for wearing their own clothes on set! -
Yes! On almost every production, the hair & make-up department are responsible for styling your child’s look.
Please ensure that your child arrives with clean, with recently-washed hair and no make-up. Please do not make educated guesses about how your child should look in advance!
However, in the rare instance that the production asks your child to arrive with their hair styled a specific way or with specific make-up on, we will notify you in advance.
-
This depends on the production.
We will always ask in our availability checks if you are happy to have your child's hair trimmed, cut or styled.
This will be relayed to production in advance and should they wish to make any changes to your child's hair, we will request your permission.
All haircuts are compensated as per our Junior Rates Page.
While your child will earn a fee for having their hair cut by production, they will not receive a fee if production only styles their hair.
-
It’s an unspoken rule that your child should not approach the main cast unless they engage with your child first.
This is industry etiquette. If they do start conversation, be polite. Never ask for an autograph or photo.
Being starstruck is an occupational hazard, but your child will be expected to remain professional. Everyone’s there because they have a job to do!
The main cast, even when they seem unoccupied, could be rehearsing lines, finding the emotion of the scene or waiting upon instructions from the director.
-
We always recommend a refillable water bottle, as well as any snacks.
Security and Safeguarding
-
Yes. Parents are not permitted to look after their child/children on set once they are of compulsory school age.
The children will be cared for by trained, Enhanced DBS-checked, experienced & professional chaperones. Chaperones are arranged by production.
-
Either a member of production, the chaperone or the EXP booker will contact you to arrange the collection of your child as soon as possible.
There are trained medics on set. If it is an urgent matter, they are trained to take care of your child and follow the necessary procedures.
-
Before your child goes onto set, we always ensure that you have name and number of the:
On-Set Contact
Main EXP Booker
Main Chaperoneso that your child is always reachable in case of an emergency.
-
Production will have somewhere secure for your child to keep their items, often manned by a professional security personnel, but this isn’t always guaranteed. If in doubt, please ask.
It is recommended that your child does not bring valuables or sentimental items with them on a shoot.
-
Yes, children will have a separate changing room for both the fitting and filming engagements.
While multiple children could share a dressing room, their fittings will take place in designated male or female fitting rooms, with the child's chaperone present throughout the process.
-
Please always ensure that you flag any allergies and dietary requirements with the EXP booker on confirmation of all bookings for all productions.
We will relay these to the production team but we ask that you also flag it with the AD/chaperone you sign-in with on the day of the booking to ensure that absolutely everyone is aware.
-
The qualified set medic will call you to ensure that they are allowed to administer the medication.
The chaperone can keep the medicine safe but the set medic is responsible for administering it.
We will relay any medical conditions to the production team but we ask that you also flag it with the AD/chaperone that you sign your child in with on the day of the booking. This will ensure that absolutely everyone is aware so that your child’s medical needs will be catered for.
-
Unfortunately not!
We understand that parents would love to see what their children are up to on set however, due to the confidentiality of the production, no spoilers are allowed!
This would also be a huge breach of the Non-Disclosure Agreement (NDA) contract that you will sign on behalf of your child before your child works on each production, as well as Extra People Juniors own terms and conditions.
This includes even photos of their costume at the fitting!
Any breach of contract could result in the immediate removal from the production and from our agency.
The same applies when you are sent any information pertaining to the production.
It is vitally important that you and your child do not share any details with anyone else or post anything on any form of social media. You are expected to treat all information with utmost confidentiality.
Leaking confidential material will detrimentally affect the likelihood of future possible work for your child.
If we receive any stock photos/footage from production that we are allowed to share, we will share them with you!

Our Commission is 20% plus VAT. Commision is deducted from your child's payment after they have after they have completedthe work on set.
-
Payment is made via bank transfer.
Payment takes on average 28 days from the day that your child has worked.
Our target is that payments are completed within 6 weeks for all projects. However, due to factors outside of our control (inc. how long it takes to receive the salary vouchers and payments from production companies), we ask artistes to allow up to 8 weeks for payments to arrive. If there is a delay beyond that, the Entertainment Partners back office will chase moneys on your behalf and will keep you informed.
As per our Terms & Conditions, you agree to open and maintain a separate Bank or Building Society account in the name of your child. The bank account needs to be in the name of the child, not the parent.
-
You will have visibility of the provisional figures during your child's work day through the Job Review section on thier profile, and on wrap these figures will be updated with any supplementary fees incurred.
If this wasn’t settled by the AD at sign out, please use the query box on your child's Job Review which will become active soon after the work day.
-
No. We will invoice production directly.
-
Yes, child actors/extras have to pay tax on their income if they earn over the personal allowance of £12,570.
They must register as self-employed with HMRC once they earn a £1000 earning threshold within a 1 year tax year.
If they are under 16 they are not required to pay National Insurance.
Important Documents
-
It is a legal requirement for a child to be licensed if they're under school leaving age and taking part in: films, plays, concerts or other public performances that the audience pays to see, or that take place on licensed premises; and any assignments where the child is paid.
Children should never work without a licence in place, not least because this would invalidate the production’s insurance.
-
Once your child is booked, everything that is required from you will be explained by the agent. However, a quick explanation:
STEP 1: The production will apply for the licence with the council.
STEP 2: Parents are asked to complete a part of the form with regards to the child's details.
STEPS 3: Parents obtain and submit a permission letter from the school.
STEP 4: Once the licence is granted (time frames differ from council to council), production keep the license on file.
Children filming have to be licensed by their local education authority (defined as where Council Tax is paid, not where the child goes to school) and as such the producer is responsible for making sure that those regulations are adhered to.
Take a look at the following link for more information: https://www.gov.uk/apply-for-child-performance-licence
-
This is a Disclosure and Barring Service. It's a UK procedure that checks a person's criminal history.
Children do not need one. This is for adults that film with children on set to ensure that the children are safe on set.
-
This is a non-disclosure agreement that a parent signs on behalf of their child.
It is a binding agreement between the production company and parent/child that must be completed before the child goes onto set.
It’s essential that your child understands the significance and implication of each NDA you sign on their behalf - taking photos, videos and audio recordings of any confidential material at either a fitting or filming engagement is a huge breach of contract. Likewise, sharing any details online in group chats or on social media, including information sent to you in agency communication. will also breach the NDA and our agency’s terms and conditions.
Productions take confidentiality and security very seriously, and the biggest streaming giants have teams of corporate lawyers that will chase for damages from those that have shared sensitive material online.
-
This is a document that production requires parents to sign on behalf of their children for fitting/filming which contains information relevant to the specific production on usage and company policy.
This will be sent to parents electronically prior to the child's attendance on set.
Other
-
Supporting Artists are not usually the main stars, but you'll be part of something really cool and you will be able to see yourself on TV and the big screen!
-
Being front and centre in the scene is not guaranteed. However sometimes the Director bumps supporting artists up to a featured presence on camera. Often a background role can be far more involved and visible than the name suggests.
Some roles are featured roles from the start of the casting process, which will be relayed and explained in detail with the initial availability check.
-
Most kids have a lot of fun on set! You'll meet new people and see how movies and TV shows are made.

On termination of your registration with Extra People Juniors, we will keep your contact and compliance information as long as required by law. All other information will be deleted.
